Jessel Miller on the HeART of Teaching

Though unconventional in her teaching methods, Jessel Miller flows/goes the extra mile to keep her students on their toes. Each week she comes up with a concept that she feels will educate the novice and stretch the professionals. An intuitive painter, she doesn't plan out the class in detail yet it has a shape and form unlike most rigidly formulated and formulaic classes.

I do not have training as a teacher, yet my 50 years of creating and 38 years running the Jessel Gallery influence the standard of excellence I seek to school  both my professional and beginning students. If you have never had any training in arts (from sketching to mixing color)it can be a daunting experience and my goal is to take my students through the door of fearless, freedom and forge our way through uncharted waters to the minds open Sea of possibilities.

My students teach me so much each class and because they bring their life experiences to the room we are all moved and inspired by the history their pieces evoke.

I realize teaching in itself is an art that must be honored and it is my great privilege to even be called a Teacher. I do not take this honor lightly and I devote hours each week working through the concept for the following week. It keeps me fresh and excited in my own art and hopefully helps my students find their own path on the journey to trusting their own hand and heART.

WHAT STUDENTS SAY

Last Fall I was feeling "Pot Bound" due to COVID and a multi-year kitchen re-model. I needed an attitude adjustment. By chance, while visiting the Jessel Gallery for a map of Open Studios, I learned acrylic classes were offered, twice a week. I signed-up and hoped I could find some fun through painting - again. (In a past life I was an architectural illustrator.) Jessel's classes were just the ticket for all of my needs. In class I found a spacious work environment, great companions, a nurturing teacher, great music and a new love of color and expression. The varied lessons have developed my sense of chroma, looseness and a sequence/plan/Secret Handshake. My disposition has changed and I have several successful paintings to show for it. My current work is vibrant and I'm more energetic thanks to Jessel creating a space, giving of her knowledge and time to all of her students.
Michelle Moore
Michelle did a great job expressing exactly how we all feel so lucky to be mentored n nurtured by Jessel. I feel humbled to be able to feed off her energy n creativity. She has also taught each n everyone of us how to listen to our own Creative Spirit n use our paint brushes as a tool to express ourselves. Jesselism has allowed me to be more lose n gives me the freedom to let the painting lead me. For the first, after years of taking classes on n off, l’m actually, framing my paintings n running out of wall space at home. Thank you Jessel for giving me a new approach n direction in my paintings.

I am primarily a photographer, who sometimes paints, but have a hard time getting started on a piece.  I signed up for Jessel's classes as a muse ignition, and it worked.   Jessel encourages indulging in experimentation and embracing freedom, in a way that often causes me to arrive at outcomes I didn't see coming. Everyone in the classes is supportive and willing to try something different, prompted by Jessel's weekly themes and mid-work suggestions.  It is an open and engaging environment.

The first minute I walked into the Jessel gallery I was infused with the feeling of wonder. Such incredible beauty surrounded me on every wall /on every easel/ in every room -gorgeous colors/ a plethora of talent on display at every turn/I was absolutely mesmerized. I have only taken a handful of classes thus far - but I quickly have learned I will be coming again and again. We are mostly inspired by Jessel, who encourages and guides us to feel our painting intuitively...and then the laughter, the calmness, the warmth and the stirring energy among all of us contribute to the the soul satisfying experience of being there. It feels like a home away from home.

Thank You for opening my mind about color Jessel. I'm going to bring what I learned into my work. It was a really great class. I hope to do another sometime.

“Learning the (He)Art of Letting Go.”  This is why I take classes from Jessel – to learn the (he)art of letting go on a consistent basis.

When my friend brought me to Jessel Gallery for the first time and I saw Jessel’s work, I felt “Freedom.” Her work expresses the “freedom” I’ve been searching for in my own art journey.  I was amazed at the freedom of expression I was able to achieve in my first class! So, I continue to come back. I never know what is going to come through me in these classes or how it is going to show up on paper.  And I am always amazed. Since attending these classes, I have come to identify myself as an artist and an art ambassador with confidence; looking forward to the day I can just let go and soar!

In Jessel’s art classes I feel much love, camaraderie, support and sense of community.

Thank you Jessel!
Thank you fellow students!
